LEARN MORE ABOUT WHO WE ARE

SUMMER CAMPS IN AUSTIN, TX

A Day at the Camp

We start each day with announcements and jokes, stories, skits, games, or challenges. Campers then join their group (they are divided by both age and experience) and go to their first class (magic, juggling, or puppets). Once or twice a week, we have special theme days. On each of those days, campers, counselors, and staff are encouraged to dress up appropriately.

The first class is followed by snack time. Campers will eat snacks they brought from home while they play board games, share magic tricks, or just run around and drive the staff crazy. With food in their bellies and a good morning workout, the campers are now ready for more classes.

After two more classes, campers have an hour for lunch, which is also brought from home, and games (board games, group games, and free playtime). After lunch, we will either have a theme-day specific group activity or campers will get to choose from several different classes during our bonus class. The choices are different every day and include choices like balloon sculpting, finger knitting, origami, Fantastic Magic Camp’s own version of Dungeons and Dragons, face painting, improvisational comedy, clowning, and more magic, juggling, or puppets.

We end most days with an exciting performance by a professional variety entertainer. We bring in some of the best magicians, jugglers, and ventriloquists in Texas to perform for our campers.

OTHER IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

An aerial view of a mountain range with a blue sky in the background.

Who may attend Fantastic Magic Camp?

The Magic Camp is designed for children ages 6 through 12, although we consider making exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Campers are grouped by age and experience.

Can my child be in the same group as a particular friend?

Groups are formed based on age and experience.

Campers have ample opportunity to spend time with friends before camp, during morning assembly, during snack breaks, during lunch, during bonus class, and after camp. We find it best to separate siblings regardless of age to give each child an opportunity to grow individually. If you prefer otherwise, please talk to us prior to camp.

What is the ratio of campers to caregivers?

We advertise a 5 to 1 ratio, but our CITs and teachers often reduce that ratio to as low as 3 to 1. To learn more about our counselor training program, see the Youth Leader Training Academy page.

What about lunch?

Please pack a sack lunch and a snack that requires no refrigeration or heating.

Do you provide any outdoor activities, or is everything indoors?

When the weather allows, we do partake in outdoor activities. In the hottest days of summer, all of our teaching is done in air-conditioned comfort inside, to guard against problems caused by the summer heat in Texas. Campers engage in physical activity during organized indoor games, daily juggling classes, and other skill workshops.

Can my child come to more than one session?

Absolutely, and you even get a discount for doing so! A camper coming to our camp for the first time takes our well-established beginner curriculum, and after that, they take a constantly changing series of courses designed to enhance those basic skills. There will always be some review, of course, but each session offers a new curriculum and new challenges.

If my child returns for another session, will she repeat the same curriculum?

All beginning campers take approximately the same curriculum, which has been tested and refined over nearly twenty years. Returning campers, however, build on those basic skills with constantly changing curriculum packages. There will be some duplication, such as reviewing important basic skills, but there will also be many new classes and activities. (Some kids take every session we offer!) We design exciting new curriculum packages every summer.

Can my child bring a friend who is visiting to camp for just one day?

Family members can visit the camp unannounced at any time, but the curriculum is only available to campers who have signed up for a complete session. You may make inquiries about single-day tuition, which we can often accommodate on a case-by-case basis. Attendants for children with disabilities who need them, by the way, may come for free.

Is Fantastic Magic Camp licensed by the state of Texas?

As a single-subject program, Fantastic Magic Camp is not licensed by the state of Texas.

My child has special needs; can you accommodate them?

Almost certainly! Fantastic Magic Camp is a mainstream day camp in Austin. It is not targeted at any particular group of children.

If a child with special needs has an attendant to assist him or her with daily activities at school or camp, the attendant is of course welcome to accompany the child to Fantastic Magic Camp. Medically necessary attendants enjoy all the benefits of Fantastic Magic Camp (including supplies). tuition-free.

Although our staff has limited training for kids with disabilities, we have had some wonderful successes with children who have ADD, ADHD, OCD, Tourette’s syndrome, Down syndrome, or conditions on the autism spectrum disorder, as well as those who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind or vision impaired, or have mobility challenges. We recognize that we cannot meet the needs of every child, but we are eager to try!

If your child has a particular need, please let us know in advance. We appreciate the opportunity to consult with you and your child’s support team and healthcare providers. Whenever possible, we will include best practices for addressing your child’s needs in our staff training.

What are the Performer's Academy and the Monster Performer's Academy?

These programs feature a strong emphasis on performance and theater and culminate with a “big” performance at the end of the session. These programs are only offered during three of our summer sessions. For more information, please visit our Performers Academy page.

Is any financial assistance available?

Yes, Fantastic Magic Camp maintains a scholarship fund to help defray tuition for campers who might otherwise not be able to attend. For more information and to apply, please see the Scholarships page.

What is your tax ID or EIN for childcare reimbursement?

The EIN is 27-4230018. We established “Magic Camp USA, LLC” and the dba “Fantastic Magic Camp” in 2011.

Do you have discounts?

In addition to scholarship opportunities, we do offer discounts from time to time, including multiple-session or sibling discounts. Unless otherwise noted (e.g., "bundles"), discounts cannot be stacked. The system will always calculate the discount that will give you the greatest discount, but it will not allow you to use multiple discount offers on the same order.

What is your cancellation policy?

To cancel a registration, there is a $100 fee per camper per week. However, that amount can be applied to a future registration.

Youth Leader Training Academy

Love Magic Camp? Once a camper turns 13, the magic doesn’t have to stop. A new and exciting opportunity, open only to campers, awaits!

The adventure begins with an invitation to join our Youth Leader Training Academy (YLTA).

Fantastic Magic Camp Youth Leader Training benefits both team members and the young campers. The immediate benefit is that campers have highly trained young counselors as role models. We are proud that every staff member, instructor, director, and board member was once a Fantastic Magic Camper! The long-term benefits are leadership skills and character strengths that last a lifetime, ensuring that YLTA members become strong contributors to society.

Every year, starting in January, the YLTA team embarks on a series of advanced leadership and life skills training courses. Team members attend specialized workshops on first aid, CPR, working with campers who have special needs, role modeling, creative game playing, and other issues important to mentoring young campers. Additionally, YLTA members receive training in time management, goal setting, social media etiquette, and issues as mundane (but important) as personal hygiene and how to clean a bathroom.

After a team member has completed the required hours of training, they become a counselor in training (CIT). During camp sessions, CITs shadow more experienced counselors and assist in the camp’s daily operations. Over the course of five years, a YLTA member receives 350 hours of training as they move up the ranks to a counselor and then a senior counselor. YLTA members 18 and older may apply to join our staff. One of the greatest benefits of our training program is that because everyone who works at our camp, including the director, was at one time a camper, they truly understand our program and the needs of every camper.

In the past, the members of our YLTA have helped train adult counselors from other camps and have also presented leadership corporate programs. If you would like our YLTA team to present a leadership program for your company or organization, please send an email to peter@magiccamp.com.

MAGIC CAMP AFTER SCHOOL

A poster for learn magic fantastic magic camp

Magic Camp After School, a.k.a., Fantastic Magic Camp To-Go, has teamed up with nationally acclaimed Discover Magic to deliver magic programs for schools, home-school groups, community centers, youth organizations, country clubs, and other organizations. Fantastic Magic Camp became a franchise partner of Discover Magic six years ago as a way to deliver enhanced teaching materials to our campers. We are now prepared to expand beyond our winter, spring, and summer camps by offering a series of both online and in-person magic courses to outside organizations.

We chose to partner with Discover Magic because their teaching style and goals mirrored those that Fantastic Magic Camp has developed over the last 27 years. This is due, in great part, to the fact that internationally acclaimed magician and educator Michael Ammar was a frequent guest and magic teacher at Fantastic Magic Camp years before he designed the Discover Magic program. Discover Magic focuses on magic, fun, and learning. The magic makes the fun happen; the fun makes the learning easy.

THE MAGIC CONSISTS OF...

  • Four full-length “wand courses" were taught over a period of days or weeks in person or online.
  • Single-day workshops and optional stand-alone tricks.
  • Unique, high-quality custom props, materials, and online resources you won’t find in off-the-shelf magic kits.

THE FUN COMES FROM...

  • Surprises! Discover Magic Kids learn something new in every lesson that they can share right away with their friends and family.
  • Unique games that help them explore their creativity, feel connected to the group, and build lasting friendships.
  • Bonus content to practice over time, so they can take their Discover Magic experience as far as they want to go.

THE LEARNING EMPHASIZES...

  • The Eight Traits of a True Magician: Respectful, Prepared, Enthusiastic, Confident, Humble, Creative, Authentic, and Giving.
  • Our unique “power practice” approach, where kids perform for each other and help each other from the very start, builds friendships and teamwork.
  • Practice and exploration through a 24/7 “video vault” that provides access to past lessons kids can review again and again and optional bonus lessons they can master on their own.

Discover Magic is unlike any other enrichment program. That’s because it is...

  • Rooted in empathy, magic is unique. No other art form, skill, or hobby depends as much on the performer putting themselves in other people’s shoes as magic does.
  • About personal development, not just skill development: Discover Magic is focused on kids growing through magic, not into magicians.
  • A productive use of time: Discover Magic isn’t a “babysitting” program. It doesn’t just fill time. It engages kids in fun things to do, learn, explore, and practice—even when they’re at home.

our scholarships we offer

The Jason Caballero Memorial Scholarship Fund (named in honor of our first camp counselor) can provide scholarships for tuition assistance to those campers needing it. Our goal is to not let a lack of money keep someone who is truly interested from attending our camp. If you would like to make a contribution to the Scholarship Fund, please use the form below, or you may call us at (512) 988-3045.

Request a Scholarship

We want to make our scholarships available to those children who will benefit the most from our specific programs, as opposed to simply a need for day care. We answer scholarship requests as soon as we can, normally within two weeks of receiving them.

To apply, use our Contact Us form. Enter your email address and your name, as well as a brief paragraph stating:

  • The reason for the tuition assistance request (e.g., single parenting, unusual medical expenses, etc.)

  • Why do you think your child would particularly benefit from attending the Fantastic Magic Camp?
