Performer’s Academy Programs For 2018
To be updated with 2018 Summer Camp Schedule soon:
The Performer’s Academy 2017 summer programs were part of our regular camp sessions with an extra emphasis on performing. All the members of the Performer’s Academy did work on creating an actual show to be presented at the end of the session. There were two versions of this exciting program –Regular Performer’s Academy (Sessions #3 and #5) and MonsterPerformer’s Academy (Session #4).
Performer’s Academy (Sessions #3 and #5) – Campers were given a chance to dive a little deeper into their acquired skills: magic, juggling or puppetry, by organizing a special "Performers Academy Show". There is no pre-registration needed. This year it will be run during session 3 and session 5. Campers that have participated in several Fantastic Magic Camp session over a few years, or maybe over just one summer, are welcome to apply on the first day of camp. There is no set age limit, but most kids that choose to participate are 9 to 12 years old. The Performer’s Academy will work on putting together a show for the rest of the camp, for an hour or two each day. The show will be performed on the last day of camp, in front of parents, siblings and other campers. They will write their own script, choose what they want to perform, build props and create their own costumes. The program will be under the direction of Bertil Fredstrom (magician Black Bert). Bertil has performed in Europe and the US and has been a judge in some of the most prestigious worldwide magic competitions. Campers in this program will have access to some large-scale magic props and illusions. The program runs during the usual camp hours of 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Monster Performer’s Academy (Session #4)– This program is open to anyone ages 10 – 18 who has a serious interest in performing. Participants do not necessarily need to have previous experience at Fantastic Magic Camp, but they should have a strong desire to perform. The program is not limited to those who want to perform magic, juggling, or puppets. Those who wish to work on clowning, comedy or MC skills are also encouraged to participate in this workshop. The program includes classes on stage presence, voice projection, staging, costuming, and improvisational theater. Campers can use props they already own, but they will also be taught new skills and have access to some of our magic, juggling, and puppet props and stage illusions. The program will be under the direction of Peter Hinrichs (AKA Peter the Adequate). For the last 40 years, Peter has performed in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. He has created magic tricks and routines for other magicians including a few winning routines for magic contests. Campers will also get a chance to work with some of the professional entertainers who will be performing at the camp. This program runs from noon to 6:00 pm every day. Participants will present their show to friends and families on the last day at 6:00 pm. They will also get a chance to be part of a public show, along with a host of professional entertainers, the next afternoon (Saturday, July 22nd at 3:30 pm, in a 100-year-old vaudeville theater in the heart of downtown Austin: the beautiful Scottish Rite Theater.)
Pre-Registration is required for this program. For an extra $75 per week, campers can take advantage of the rest of our Fantastic Magic Camp experience and join us at 9:00 am every morning. To do so, just add the “Rehearsal Time” option when registering.
